Cosmetics Advice for Contact Wearers from your Rye Brook, NY Eye Doctor

If you wear contact lenses a few guidelines should be followed when using makeup. Here are a few basic pointers on how to make sure you keep your eyes attractive and healthy.

Which Cosmetics Are the Safest for your Eyes?

First and foremost, we strongly suggest you buy only cosmetics that are oil free and fragrance free. In addition, to avoid peeling and smearing, which could result in irritating your contacts, purchase water-resistant mascara and eye liner pencils. Finally it's important to replace makeup at regular intervals - ideally replace mascara once a month, eyeliner after three months and eye shadows every 6 months.

The Safe Application of Cosmetics

Make certain you wash your hands thoroughly prior to putting in your contacts. Apply all eye makeup with care so you won't touch your lenses. Make sure you don't apply mascara or eye liner to the inside lid and apply mascara from the center of the lashes instead of the base. Don't use someone else’s makeup or apply if your eyes are red or infected.

Another important tip is to remove eye makeup each day with a hypoallergenic, oil-free remover. It's advised to take out lenses before cleaning off makeup.

Adhering to these guidelines when using makeup during lens use can prevent red, itchy or infected eyes and damage to the contacts.

If your eyes are red or irritated don't put on makeup. Don't hesitate to contact your eye doctor if you have any redness, discomfort, or itchiness. Our Rye Brook, NY optometrist will be glad to help you with any contact problems that you may be having.
